Why buy your garage door from the makers? It’s because every garage door opening is different. Sure, there are more commonly seen sizes, but some garage door openings even differ from one side to another. Every garage door that Steel-Line manufactures is built to your home’s unique specifications.
A well-fitting garage door can enhance your home’s appearance. It also provides better insulation, potentially reducing your energy costs. However, an ill-fitting garage door can ruin your home’s facade and affect its value.
This article looks at how to choose the size of your garage door and the factors to consider before your free measure and quote with Steel-Line to get the right fit every time.
Garage Door Measurements and Guidelines
It may come as a surprise that there is no real standard sizing for garage doors. The design of your garage, the size of your car, and how you use your garage will also play a role in the size of your garage door. Whatever the unique needs of your household, there is a garage door that can be fitted.

Steel-Line’s Tilt Garage Doors
Steel-Line’s tilt garage doors are built on a single panel, reinforced by an internal steel frame. While we manufacture tilt doors up to 2.4 m high and 5.5 m wide, the maximum weight for a tilt door, including cladding, is 175 kg.
Our tilt garage doors are individually designed and built to suit the exact size of your garage door opening. This is so we can ensure a precise fit with an angled bottom rail or taper, should your garage require it.
As tilt garage doors swing outwards and upwards, you’ll need to ensure you allow for enough room in front of your garage for the door to open.

Steel-Line’s Garage Roller Doors
Steel-Line customises each of our roller garage doors to fit any size opening. Whether you have a single garage or need a roller door for an industrial shed, Steel-Line will manufacture a door that fits precisely and offers a neat and tidy finish.
Our ‘A’ Series residential roller garage doors range in width from 900 mm to 3430 mm at a height of 1200 mm to 3000 mm. Our ‘AA’ Series residential doors have a width of 3435 mm to 5500 mm at a height of 2200 mm to 3000 mm. The ‘B’ Series light industrial doors range from 3101 mm to 5100 mm in width and 3300 mm to 5100 mm in height.
As roller garage doors require headroom for the rolling mechanism, Steel-Line recommends a minimum of 430 mm.

Considerations Before You Choose Which Size Is Right
In order to be a practical addition to your home, there are a few tips to follow before you make a choice about the right garage door size for your home.
- Take a measurement of the height of your garage opening to ensure enough headroom for different types of garage doors and components, such as the motor. Also, measure the depth of your garage to ensure there is enough room for garage door components, such as panels and tracks, to fit.
- Consider your storage requirements. For example, if you wish to use overhead storage in your garage, a roller door might be the most appropriate option for your home. Read more about different types of garage doors in Should you choose a sectional, roller or tilt door for your garage?
- Garage door sizes can really impact the look of your home from the street as they are a large part of any home’s facade. Use Steel-Line’s garage door visualiser to upload a photograph of your home and ensure the size and style of the garage door enhance your property’s visual appeal.
- Take measurements of your vehicle — the length and width — to ensure you have enough clearance to open doors without hitting and damaging anything. Don’t forget you’ll need extra side room for things such as storage and workbenches to ensure the functionality of your garage isn’t compromised.
